How AltTuningLab calculates its maps and estimates
The visualizer, guide figures, and tension tables share the same source data. This page documents the calculations and the places where a real instrument or string specification can differ.
Fretboard note maps
Each open string starts at its selected pitch class. Every fret adds one semitone, and the note wraps through a 12-note chromatic cycle. The visualizer applies that calculation independently to each string for 24 frets.
The current interface displays sharp note names for chromatic notes. A note such as A# may appear where a written key signature would use Bb. The pitch is the same; the spelling differs.
Chords and scales
Chords and scales use semitone intervals from the chosen root. A minor triad uses 0, 3, and 7 semitones. Natural minor uses 0, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, and 10. The tool highlights every matching pitch class on the configured fretboard.
The map shows possible note locations rather than a prescribed fingering. Hand position, muting, range, and musical context still determine which notes make a playable voicing.
String-tension estimates
The calculator uses the standard vibrating-string relationship:
- T is estimated tension in pounds.
- UW is estimated unit weight.
- L is speaking length in inches.
- F is frequency in hertz, using A4 = 440 Hz.
Plain-string unit weight uses nominal diameter and steel density. Wound strings use an effective construction factor because the core, wrap wire, and air gaps differ among products. That approximation makes the results useful for comparison, but it cannot reproduce a manufacturer's unit-weight table.
Gauge-guide recommendations
A gauge guide fixes the tuning and scale length, calculates one starting set, and compares nearby low-string gauges at the same pitch. The page reports the assumptions beside the table.
Treat the result as a way to narrow your options. Nut slots, bridge travel, action, picking attack, string construction, and personal preference can change the final choice. Check a string maker's specification before using the estimate as a setup target.
Figures and review
The guide capture process generates fretboard images from the live visualizer at a fixed viewport and theme. Its configuration records the tuning, string count, chord or scale, and expected label before capture.
Material changes update the visible review date and sitemap date. Cosmetic edits do not reset publication dates.
